Columbus Day: Twig Boats

Hi Friends!

Today is Columbus Day and we’re sharing our Columbus Day Twig Boats. Although my kids will probably never hear a song about Christopher Columbus or remember it for that matter, I surprisingly remember bits of a song I heard as a kid lol.

Let’s break twigs together and make these cute little boats. Anyone else remember a Christopher Columbus song growing up? Tell me it’s normal.

PREP

  1. Draw your boats and color them in.

  2. Color in your water/ocean. We made the mistake of doing it last.

SAILS

  1. Draw your sails on the parchment paper, cut them out, and set them aside.

    • Square, rectangle, or curved.

2. Add hot glue to where your posts will be and carefully place the twig posts.

Using curved twigs creates a 3D appearance.

3. Cut the pipe cleaners to size and glue a cross to three of the larger sails, then glue them onto the center post on each boat.

Coloring the ocean and sky were harder to do after everything was glued on.

Naomi decided on an early sunset.

WOODEN BOATS

  1. Break the twigs to size and glue on. You may use pretzel sticks instead if you’d like.

  2. Write the names of the ships: Nina, Santa Maria, & Pinta

That’s it!

Friends, if I can find a clip of the song, I’ll link it. I can’t be the only one replaying this song.

Happy crafting!

Amanda and Naomi
