Columbus Day: Accordion Boat Craft

Hi Friends,

Today, we’re sharing our simple Columbus Accordion Fold Boats that require only a few items. They aren’t as involved as last year’s boats, but still a lot of fun. This turned out cute and put a little twist on the 3 ships. The details are below.

PREP

  1. Tear the blue, green, and/or turquoise papers into thin strips or smaller pieces.

WATER

  1. Begin to glue down the pieces onto your white paper, horizontally.

Make sure to leave about 1/2 of the page white.

BOATS

  1. Draw your 3 boats with a pencil (you may use different sizes or keep them the same size) and cut them out.

An easy way to create identical boats: Fold the page into thirds, draw the boat on the top, hold firmly, and cut out.

2. Next, fold your boats into mini accordions- the smaller the folds, the more dimension you’ll see.

FLAG POLES & FLAGS

  1. Cut 3-inch thin strips for the flag pole (like Naomi’s) or for added dimension(like mine), cut 3”x 1” strips and fold them into thirds. Glue the folds together.

  2. Glue your poles onto the paper and then add glue below them for the boats. Press your boats down at the lower folds/creases, NOT the peaks, or you will flatten the boat.

  3. Draw your flags in a wavy design (like Naomi’s above) or fold the paper in thirds(mine, not shown), draw one flag, and then cut them out.

  4. Glue your flags onto the poles or next to them.

SUN & CLOUDS

  1. Cut out a sun from the yellow paper. We traced the glue stick.

  2. From your extra paper, cut out clouds (optional).

  3. Draw birds with the black marker(optional).

MESSAGE

10. Lastly, with your pencil, write “Columbus sailed the ocean blue…” and then trace over it with your marker.

That’s it!

Happy crafting!

Amanda and Naomi
