April Fool's Cereal Prank

Hi friends,

Today we’re sharing this easy April Fool’s cereal prank, using an old cereal box and a sneaky bagged item.

DIY cereal prank using an old cereal box and dog food.

Check out how I got my daughter Naomi to participate in this prank, the hilarious confusion displayed on her face, and the fit of laughter that followed.

What You'll Need

  1. Empty Cereal Box & Cereal Bag.

  2. Scissors

  3. Hot Glue

  4. (3-4) Cups of Dry Dog Food, Beans, Pasta, Crackers, or Different Cereal

The Steps

Because we work with All About Hope , explaining why we needed to do this activity wasn’t hard.

I told Naomi that Cindy our CEO, was requesting photos of kids doing a variety of things, for the Kids Doing Everyday Things” Campaign. Different families would be participating, with children engaging in different activities. That whole story was a fib. = }

A little role-playing in the photo.

BAG

  1. Pull the empty bag from the cereal box and cut any uneven areas on the opened side.

  2. Fill your bag with 2-3 cups of dog food or whatever you decided to use, then lay it down and spread out the dog food.

3. Add a strip of hot glue to the inside of the bag and seal carefully. That is now the bottom of the bag and not the top.

BOX

  1. Place the new bag seal facing down in the box.

  2. Add hot glue to one side of the flaps and slide the scissors between them before sealing. The scissors provide a solid base to help press the flaps firmly together and not cave in. Repeat with the opposite side.

    That’s it!

REAL TIME PRANK

Naomi is posing, having fun, and letting me take photos of each step.

The box was sealed perfectly so she didn’t suspect a thing. Nothing out of the ordinary, so far.

I told her she didn’t have to actually eat any cereal if she didn’t want to, but that we needed to at least photograph all the steps, Cindy would decide what photos she’d use.

But then she takes a good look at the bag and is clearly confused.

She asks, “what is this??”

I act confused as well and tell her I don’t know what she’s talking about because it’s a new box.

She then says, “this isn’t cereal! What’s in here??” She proceeds to open the bag, pour some into her bowl, and smile. She knows something is up.

I shout, “April Fools!” and she smiles.

She’s still confused because she doesn’t understand how April Fools plays into the photos needed for All About Hope, why dog food is in the cereal box, or how it got in there. I told her it was ALL a prank and that none of it was real.

To which she answers, “This isn’t LIFE, this is death!” LOL

And then uncontrollable laughter follows.

She’s a great sport like her dad!

She played further along and allowed me to take these silly photos of us = )

SIDE STORY

We completed this craft and shared it back in March of 2019. By some fluke, it had somehow disappeared. It wasn’t until early 2023 that I realized the post was nowhere to be found. Not only did I have to rewrite this whole post, I experienced poetic justice for my deeds lol.

Happy crafting

Amanda and Naomi
