Talavera Crosses

Hi friends,

This week, we created Talavera Crosses, detailed, colorful, and inspired by the beautiful clay ones.

These won’t need to be fired, but will take some patience to complete. You’ll draw your designs, paint them, let them dry, and then add a matte or glossy finish on top. Check them out below.

PREP

  1. Lay three craft sticks vertically with the center one slightly higher than the outer two, then hot glue two craft sticks vertically.

  2. Flip over the cross and glue a strip of scrap paper/cardboard to the back to stabilize the cross.

  3. Paint your cross in a solid color of your choice and let it dry for about 5-10 minutes.

DESIGN

  1. Once your cross is dry, draw your design with the white colored pencil: flowers, leaves, vines, swirls, diamonds, dots, birds, hearts, etc.

-Alternatively, trace the white pencil with a white or black paint marker and leave the cross unpainted.

  2. Use your narrow brushes and paints to fill in the designs.

  3. Let the paint dry for 5-10 minutes.

That’s it!

Optional

  1. Flip the cross over, use 1/4 of a pipe cleaner, and hot glue it to the upper portion of the cross for hanging.

  2. Apply a layer of Mod Podge to the front to seal the paint and give it a glossy or matte finish.

Happy crafting,

Amanda and Naomi
