Fun Coffee Filter WAVES

Hi friends,

We are officially in July and summer has never looked so much like a homebody’s staycation. There’s no vacation, no amusement parks, no ocean to enjoy, but we DO have our imagination haha. Lets set the tone- step outside, close your eyes, and feel the warmth. Imagine the waves, the cool breeze, the sounds of kids splashing & squealing, the sand between your toes, and the scent of the sea… don’t you just wanna go?! What about a crisp evening by the beach, sipping on some hot tea, hot chocolate, or coffee?! I’m ready! Instead, channel that inspiration into your activity today with coffee filters and food dye! We got ours from the blues of the sea we miss and a coastal pillow we have that says, “THIS IS THE life”(shown at the end). We can't all enjoy coastal living, but we can have a little coastal fun on paper. Check out our filter waves.

What You'll Need

  1. Bowls

  2. 1/4 to 1/2 Cup Water (per bowl)

  3. (5-7) Coffee Filters

  4. Food Dye

  5. Newspaper/Tablecover

  6. White Construction Paper

  7. Scissors

  8. Glue

  9. Crayons

Optional: Forks For Mixing & Removing Filters, Gloves

The Steps

  1. Fill your bowls with 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water.

  2. Add as many drops of yellow to your water, maybe even a drop of red. Mix.

  3. Move on to creating your ocean colors- blue, seafoam green(green + blue), dark teal, or any combo. Mix.

4. Grab half of your filters and fold into a triange, cut out the center. Repeat with the next half. (we used 7 each)

5. Set aside 1 center piece for your sun.

6. Cut your filters into fourths.

7. Cut your sun into a circle and reduce size if you’d like.

8. Add your sun into the yellow and all the other pieces into the colors you’d like.

9. Let the pieces sit 3-5 minutes.

Optional: Protect your hands with gloves or ziplog bags over them.

10. Pull out the pieces and lay out on newspaper, table cover, or torn paper bag.

Let dry 5-7 minutes.

11. While the filters dry, color in a thin section of sand. Add starfish, seashells, crabs, seaweed, or rocks.

12. Begin to glue down layers of filters close to the edge of the sand and overlaping them. We worked from lightest color to darkest.

You can cut them into smaller sections for the edges.

13. Lastly, glue your sun and add some birds.

That’s it!

Naomi’s waves

My waves, I scrunched my sun a bit to give the appearance of sun rays.

And here is the pillow that helped inspire today’s craft.

Happy crafting!
