Bushy-Tailed Squirrels

Hi friends,

We have the cutest, bushy-tailed squirrels for you today. These paper roll squirrels were inspired by the squirrels in our area. At home we see them rustling in the branches, jumping from tree to tree or onto our play structure, all the while taunting our dog lol. With a few items, a little patience, and lots of fluffing of the tail, you’ll have your own bushy-tailed squirrels. Check them out below.

What You'll Need

  1. Construction Paper:

light squirrel- Light Brown, Ivory, and black

dark squirrel- Dark Brown, Light Brown, and Black

  2. Cardboard Tube

  3. Pencil

  4. Fine Tip Pen

  5. Scissors

  6. (2) Paper Clips

  7. Glue

The Steps

BODY

  1. Fold your 3 colored sheets in half, the long way, and cut in half.

  2. Cut 1 dark or light brown sheet in half once again(1/4 sheet) and glue that around the tube. Do not cut off the excess paper from the top of the tube.

  3. Secure the tube temporarily with the paper clips and set aside.

TAIL

  1. Light Squirrel: Stack 1 light brown and 1 ivory 1/2 sheet on top of each other and fold them in half.

Dark Squirrel: Stack 1 dark brown and 1 black 1/2 sheet on top of each other and fold them in half.

  2. At the fold, draw a pointy flower petal and cut it out.

  3. Starting at the tip of the petal, cut thin slices about 1 inch to 1.5 inches deep all around both sides

4. Hold the tail firmly with 1 hand while you run your fingers up and down the sides to fluff up the tail.

5. Curl the tip of the tail inward, then clip it to the bottom of the roll, covering the seam in the back, with the paper clips used before. Clip the tail facing inward or outward and adjust as needed.

EARS

  1. Press the paper on the top of the tube down, both on the back and front to create the ears.

FEATURES

  1. Use some of the scraps or the extra pieces of paper, fold them in half, and glue.

  2. Cut out eyes, nose, paws, belly, and 1-inch feet.

  3. Fold the straight edge of each foot up a bit and curl the round parts of each paw down.

  4. Glue on the eyes, nose, paws, belly, and feet.

  5. Lastly, draw a mouth and whiskers with a black fine-tip pen.

    That’s it!

Look at these adorable squirrels!
