The Steps

2. Position the face cutout on the plate so both sides are flush with the sides of the plate(the small gap at the top is intentional) trace it.

3. Turn the plate upside down and place the hat crown cutout so the little round edge fits into the matching space. Trace.

4. Turn the plate back up, and place the thinner piece(the hat brim) on the upper portion so that both sides are flush with the sides of the plate- (the small gap at the top is intentional.) Trace inner edge.

5. Position both eye cutouts about 3/4 - 1 inch up and away from the nose. Trace.

6. Cut the slender upper portion, sides next to the face, right under the eyes, and the hat crown at the bottom.

7. Poke a hole in each eye with the pencil and carefully cut out the circle.

PAINT

1. Fold up the little round notch of the crown.

2. Curve the upper edges of the crown and brim with your hand to round it out towards you (not shown until later).

3. Paint the brim of the hat and the crown black or any color you’d like.

4. Paint thin, long, downward triangles on the side of the face for “sideburns” and add brows/lashes if you’d like.

5. Add stitch marks- X’s or other designs- with gold or yellow.

Mask-options

A) Punch a hole on the sides of the mask, level with the eyes, and use curling ribbon for mask ties.

B) Use a craft stick and glue gun to create a masquerade type of holder.

That’s it!

PREP- Female Face

  1. Cut out both sheets- face, hair, eyes, flowers, and leaves( if you plan to use artificial ones skip this step).

  2. Place the face cutout on the plate matching the edges, then place the hair piece cutout over the traced face, and trace the hairline.

  3. Trace the eye cutouts about 3/4 - 1 inch up and away from the nose, then poke a hole in each eye with the pencil and carefully cut out the circles.

  4. Cut the lower portion of the face, under the nose. Set the extra piece aside.

PAINT

  1. Use that lower piece and the extra plate to trace as many flowers/leaves as you’d like, then paint them, and cut them out.

  2. Paint the hair and face. Optional: add brows and lashes if you’d like.

FLOWERS

  1. Use the glue gun to start making a flower crown on the upper portion of the hair with the flowers you made or use the artificial ones.

Mask- options

B) Use a craft stick and glue gun to create a masquerade type of holder.

That’s it!!

Our ribbons were placed too low here, we fixed them after.

Due to the COVID season, the typical activities won’t be happening: eating in Mexican restaurants, attending lively Folklorico festivals, visiting cultural museums, or the most basic, but always welcomed, BBQing with family/friends.

This craft is a great way to keep the older kids busy and let them role-play a bit. You could further their experience by serving up cheese quesadillas with a colorful fruit mix of watermelon, pineapple, papaya, mango, and jicama. And lastly, you can check out one of the many online videos on Cinco De Mayo and Ballet Folklorico, for a bit more fun.

We had a laugh placing these on our faces and trying to convince Micah that he wasn’t wearing a man bun on the hat lol :)

Happy Cinco De Mayo friends and Happy crafting,

Amanda and Naomi
